Review of Ethos (25 Middle Neck Road)

Ethos is one of two “pure Greek” restaurants in Great Neck (the other being Mykonos, but of course there are other restaurants with Greek flavors like the Great Neck Diner). I had assumed that Ethos in Great Neck was affiliated with Ethos in Manhattan, but a visit to the Manhattan restaurant’s Web site has no mention at all about the Great Neck location. So I’m assuming that ownership has changed hands since the restaurant first came over in 2007. Ethos is a restaurant which sort of defies ratings; people on TripAdvisor and OpenTable seem to love it, people on Google and Yelp seem to hate it. I’ll give you my experience. Preview The decor in Ethos is classy but short of fancy. The walls are nicely decorated with simple wall art and bottles of wine. The tables all have Greek olive oil on it that has a delightful taste. The server brought out toasted bread and pita bread which you could dip into the oil or into a dish of delicious hummus that had a slightly tangy flavor. Being in a Greek restaurant, we started with a Greek salad. This was delightfully refreshing. The vegetables were all very fresh...

Crave 11025 is closed…officially

In previous posts we’ve highlighted Groupons and Amazon Local deals to Crave 11025. It looked like a promising vegetarian restaurant on Middle Neck Road. Alas, according to Newsday it’s been shuttered for good. As I mentioned back in April, I sensed things weren’t exactly right when I tried a few times to visit Crave 11025 but found the doors locked and the lights out. Strangely, there was no sign, no comment on their Facebook page, nothing. It’s a shame I never got a chance to review it, as they had a very interesing-looking brunch menu. Anyway, if you happened,...

Review of Harvest Buffet (14 Northern Boulevard)

Harvest Buffet was one of the first all-you-can-eat buffets around these parts and it’s attained somewhat legendary status. At one point in their history, you heard rumors that there was all-you-can-eat lobster and Peking duck. Just to get it out of the way, the lobster is long gone (replaced by snow crab legs), but the Peking duck is still quacking. I tend to have the same experience when I visit all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants. I start out thinking that this is the greatest dining experience ever devised by mankind. I end up feeling quite bloated and ill and swearing that...

Today’s Groupon is to La Bottega Mangia Bene

Today’s Groupon is to a restaurant we reviewed not too long ago called La Bottega Mangia Bene. This restaurant is quite a way off the beaten path, all the way at the other end of Middle Neck Road going away from the train station. But if you love good Italian food, it’s worth the trip.

Review of Poultry Mart (33 Middle Neck Road)

More than once I’ve heard people say that Poultry Mart is “The Best Kept Secret in Great Neck”. It’s true, I must have passed by their door on Middle Neck Road a thousand times without even thinking of going in. I mean, I’d see the chicken in the window, but the signage was always so subtle that it never struck me to go inside. One day, my fiance Lisa (whose arms and legs you’ll occasionally see in pictures on this site) came down with the flu. My first instinct of course was–chicken soup. That chicken soup helps clear colds...
